Virtual Medical Environments

Since its inception in 1999, the Virtual Medical Environments Lab has conducted groundbreaking research in haptic (force feedback so the student can “feel” as well as see the patient) and visual perception designed to enhance the realism of the virtual experience. The VME has expanded its focus from Procedural Skills to include Surgical, Emergency Room and Field Hospital Simulations, Medical Gaming as well as large-scale simulations designed to train medical teams in battlefield and natural-disaster scenarios. Teams of computer artists and programmers collaborate on the development of all the VME’s innovative learning tools. 3-D imaging technology generates lifelike virtual patients on the computer screen.
